How to Wash a Synthetic Wig

A clean wig looks fresher, feels lighter and lasts longer. How often you wash depends on how often you wear it. Washing too often wears the fiber out faster, so wash when your wig starts to feel heavy or loses its bounce.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Detangle first. Gently ease out any tangles with your fingers or a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends. Don't stretch the fibers.
  2. Soak. Add wig shampoo to a basin of cold water and let the wig soak for 5 to 10 minutes. There's no need to scrub.
  3. Rinse in cold water until all the shampoo is gone. Hot water can relax the style and the curl.
  4. Condition. Smooth wig conditioner through the hair, keeping it off the cap, then rinse.
  5. Pat dry. Press the wig gently in a towel. Don't wring or twist it.
  6. Air dry on a towel or wig stand.
  7. Brush only when it's completely dry. Synthetic styles bounce back into shape on their own as they dry.

Heat friendly and human hair wigs

Heat friendly wigs wash the same way. Human hair wigs need to be styled again after every wash, just like your own hair. See the fiber guide to learn the differences.
